Compact for Devon

The aim of the Compact for Devon is to improve and develop the relationship between the voluntary & community and statutory sectors in Devon. Following wide consultation, the Compact for Devon was revised and published in 2005.

Our Compact sets out the principles between the local government, public bodies and its voluntary and community sector partners who are jointly committed to providing good services for Devon residents.

The Compact also aims to promote good practice in the way we work together through the Codes of Practice. Local Compacts are crucial to local relationships and are becoming the benchmark for improving them.

In November 2008 the Compact for Devon was awarded at the National Compact Awards with a Highly Commended Certificate for its work developing the country's first Partnership Code of Practice.

The National Compact office, based at the National Centre for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), describes a local Compact as:

  • An agreement that improves relations between local public bodies and voluntary and community groups for mutual advantage
  • A living document setting values, principles and commitments for how best to work together to achieve more for the local community
  • A way of working in partnership that gets it right together rather than wrong alone
